Porcelain Veneers & Crowns By The Mission Viejo Cosmetic Dentist |
|
A veneer is a thin shell facing placed on the front side of a tooth to correct and cover many types of teeth discrepancies. Just like a veneer, a crown, which is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire tooth to the gum line, can also be used to hide imperfections in the tooth. Both crowns and veneers are important tools used by cosmetic dentists to restore a single tooth that may have been fractured, cracked or discolored. It is also used to create a "Hollywood" smile makeover for multiple teeth. Cosmetic dentists may use porcelain veneers in combination with porcelain crowns and other dental restoration in full mouth reconstructions or bite corrections. Many people have small teeth resulting in spaces that may not be easily closed by orthodontics. Some people have worn away teeth edges resulting in a prematurely aged appearance, while others may have badly positioned teeth that appear crooked. Multiple porcelain veneers and crowns can be used together to close spaces, and lengthen short teeth that have been worn down due to aging, grinding, bad bite, or anatomic shapes. It can also fill the black triangles between teeth caused by gum recession, and provide uniform color, shape, and symmetry to give the appearance of straight, nicely shaped white teeth. Both veneers and crowns are made of different types of materials. Materials used for veneers can be made of porcelain or resin composites, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Porcelain is preferred, because it better resists stains and demonstrates better light reflecting properties of natural teeth than resin veneers. But resin veneers are thinner, which require less removal of the tooth surface before placement. |

Crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all porcelain materials. All metal crowns are the strongest as it can be constructed of alloys (gold, palladium, chromium, nickel), require less tooth removal for the crown, produces minimum wear and tear to opposing teeth, and rarely chip or break. The downside is the unnatural tooth appearance (so recommended for an out-of-sight molar), and its risk of metal toxicity leaks. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are better color matches to natural teeth, but the porcelain can chip, the metal under the porcelain can show through especially along the gum line, and some wearing of neighboring teeth can occur. All resin dental crowns are most economical, but will wear down over time and are more prone to cracking than porcelain-fused-to-metals. All porcelain dental crowns are the best natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. Unfortunately it is not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and may wear down opposing teeth more than metal or resin crowns.
